Hi, I'm Britt Malka, and ever since I was a child, I've loved reading mystery books.
I enjoyed solving mysteries with The Famous Five and Alfred Hitchcock's The Three Investigators.
My friends and I found "clues" outside our houses and came up with all sorts of crime mysteries.
Later, I devoured books by Ellery Queen and others.
Fast forward many years.
I was in a mastermind group with Leighann Dobbs. (she used her real name in the group.)
She told me she wrote cozy mysteries. I was curious to know if she was able to make money with her books.
And yes, indeed. She made a very comfortable living.
That inspired me. I had written short stories before, but my first ever novella was a cozy. (Uhm, yes, that... and an American West romance.)
After that one, I jumped into other genres, and wrote 28 or so? romance novellas under four or five pen names.
Like many writers, I considered it way too difficult to write cozy mysteries.
You don't just need a story, you need a villain, and then hide him so that readers wouldn't guess who it was.
I found that writing a cozy was very different and much harder than reading one. Ugh!
And Reading Cozies Is Fun
For a while I mostly read nonfiction books. And sometimes romance, because I wrote romance, so it was mostly to learn from other writers.
When I finally needed a break to just relax and enjoy myself, I went back to reading crime mysteries.
Like so many readers I enjoyed it. A lot!
Reading cozy mysteries is much more than passive entertainment.
It activates us. We're guessing along with the sleuth, trying to solve the puzzle before they do.
And whether we beat them or not, we get a sense of achievement when we learn whodunit.
We just love brain puzzles.
And we feel good when we solve them.
It's not by coincidence that mysteries (including cozies) are in the second most sold category on Amazon.
But Reading and Writing Is Very Different
When we read a cozy, unless it was slobby then we only find the guilty one near the end.
How do you write like that?
How do you hide nothing from the reader, no cheating, and still hide the real villain until the sleuth reveals who it is?
That's where most cozy writers fail and therefore never publish their books.
Many writers struggle with cozy mysteries because they do it wrong.
And that's a pity.
Because writing a cozy can be immense fun. Even more than reading them.
Make Sales, Not Bad Reviews
Cozy mysteries sell extremely well on Amazon and other big bookstores.
The readers are almost as voracious as romance readers.
But they are a smart bunch.
And there are things they won't like in a cozy mystery.
Things like keeping things hidden from them.
Or to introduce the villain only towards the end.
They hate such things because it deprives them of the satisfaction of solving the crime with the sleuth.
On the other hand, you cannot make it too easy to guess who did the crime either.
To avoid negative reviews and readers who put your book down and swear never to buy another from you, you need to know what your reader will expect and what will put him off.
How Do You Mislead Your Reader Without Cheating?

How Good Are You at Keeping All Those Balls in the Air?
If this is your first cozy mystery, then you're perhaps as good as I was back in 2014, when my goal was to write a cozy mystery.
The only problems were:
- I followed a romance writing tutorial.
- It was my first novella.
I had written short stories before. But when it came to writing a novel or novella, I never managed anything longer than 60 pages of unfinished stories.
Even though you can have romance in cozy mysteries, it's still a different animal than romance novels, so my novella turned out to be a mixture of cozy, romance, and the old American West.
I can tell you, though, that when I wrote "the end" after having written that story, it was like having a baby.
The joy, the pleasure, the whole new world of opportunities...

It did something to my mind.
Before, I had no idea about how to go from short story to novel or novella.
Now, I knew I could do it.
And I did it again.
With another not-really-cozy mystery, staring my favorite guardian angel, Amber.
